Collaborative Leadership
In my portfolio under collaborative leadership as a nurse, I can use the the tools in my practice to create a team environment and provide excellent patient care. During the baccalaureate program, I have acquired and refined skills in critical thinking, communication and collaborative leadership. Collaborative leadership is necessary for nurses to be able to work with many other disciplines. Nurses need to be able to work with other disciplines such as doctors, respiratory therapists, nurse aids and social workers to provide the best care for the patient. The American Nurses Association (ANA) has two standards that relate to collaborative leadership. These standards are Standard 12 Collaboration and Standard 13 Leadership. According to the ANA (2010) nurses are required to demonstrate leadership capabilities and need to be able to collaborate with families and consumers of health care (ANA,2010). I met the objective of collaborative leadership through completing several projects listed below.
My first attempt in collaboration in the FSU bachelors program was in Nurs 320 doing a presentation on the ANA. We were able to communicate via email and setting up a schedule on accomplishing our goals. Doing this project allowed me a chance to work together as students and nurses setting the tone for future group presentations. As we find out there are many different ways we can collaborate to have positive outcomes. Early and open communication was important to getting our project done in a timely manner and receiving grade of an A.
In Nursing 495 I was able to combine what I have learned starting in Nursing 320 by using the skills of collecting evidence based research and develop a fall prevention policy to implement in nursing practice for better patient outcomes. In Nursing 495 were to take on a nursing issue and come up with a solution using a team oriented environment. This program I chose was to be specific to the ED and by researching past practice within the hospital and other facilities, then determining a system that would fit well in Munson Medical Center's nursing scope of practice. The new falls prevention program would allow for data collection, ongoing evaluations and the ability to make changes if needed. The final presentation was done as a PowerPoint. The assignment taught the importance of working with a interdisciplinary team to resolve issues that can effect patient outcomes. It also enlightened me the need for organizational skills to accomplish timely goals of projects within the hospital setting.
